Protecting Your Children From Electrical Injury

If you have small children, then you are well aware of the intense curiosity that they hold for all things. This is especially true of seemingly magical devices, such as light switches, electrical outlets and all of your electronic devices. As a result, any access to these implements can present a certain hazard to an innocently curious child. One of the main dangers of electrical outlets is a child's desire to stick things into them. Whether they mishandle a plug, or decide to stick your keys into the socket, electrical outlets can be dangerously enticing to children.

One of the easiest ways to protect your children from electrical outlets is to retrofit every socket in your home with a plug cover. These come in a variety of styles, designed to fit your needs. The most basic cover is a small plastic plug that is inserted into each outlet. These covers, which can be difficult for even an adult to remove, are a literal lifesaver. Not only do they protect your children from electrical harm, but they also give you the peace of mind that your children will not accidentally electrocute themselves.

For more advanced applications, you can install newly designed tamper resistant outlets. These outlets, which are mandated in many areas for new construction, utilize spring-loaded covers for all outlets. Whenever you are using the outlet, the springs are released, allowing you to use the outlet as normal. As soon as the plug has been removed from the outlet, the covers snap back into place and are very difficult for children to operate. Furthermore, both springs must be activated at the same time in order for the cover to operate. As a result, they are nearly impossible for a child to open.

In addition to blocking the outlets themselves, you should also be very aware of the location of your electrical items. This is especially true of televisions and other heavy appliances. If your television sits on top of a tall entertainment system, for example, you will want to take extra precautions to ensure that it does not tip, falling on top of anyone in front of it. It can be very tempting for little ones to pull on cords, which can eventually lead to falling electronics. Not only does this endanger your children and everyone around them, but it can also be very damaging to your electronics.

The curious phase of childhood is one of the most stressful and difficult times for any parent. With a few simple precautions, however, you can very easily increase the overall safety of your home. Because access to electricity is both necessary and hazardous, it is important to be able to access it when necessary, while protecting our children from it. Once you do this, you can sit back, relax and breathe easy, knowing that there is one less thing for your children to get hurt by.
