Companies that rely on constant power to avoid disaster can't afford to be without generators. However, a homeowner can benefit just as much from their use. If you live in an area where a lengthy power outage is a significant possibility, you may want to strongly consider getting one. They are available in both permanent and portable varieties, with the portable ones being much more affordable and the installed types being much more powerful. If you already own one or two, here are some things you can do that will improve your ownership.
Testing
There's nothing worse than owning generators and then seeing that they don't work when you need them. This is why you should test them every six months or so just to make sure everything is still working well. If you own an installed kind, you should allow it to run everything you would depend on it to run in an emergency. If a portable kind, just turning it on every six months can ensure you won't run into a problem if a power outage occurs. If there are issues, you can address them in leisure. Power outages often occur during or after major storms, during which it may be difficult to find a store open that can address your repair concerns.
An Organized Emergency
You don't want to have to search high and low for everything you need in an emergency. Part of being prepared is not only having generators and the things you need to run it on hand, but having them all in one convenient location. Keep your switches, fuel cans, and extension cords right beside the device so you can be ready to go when the power goes out. It's hard enough to find things in odd places at a normal time. Try doing it with the lights out. It's not a situation anyone wants to be in. Be prepared and keep everything in the same location.
Do Your Maintenance
Generators are just like any other machines; they require maintenance every once in a while. If you just let your machines sit and rust in the corner of the garage, they may not last as long as you had hoped they would. Go out there every so often and clean the machine. Wipe it down, tighten any of the bolts that need it, and oil if necessary. Make sure you have gas in the tank and more waiting on hand. Just letting dirt and dust collect on the device could lead to unnecessary problems.
